Mindfulness is the Way

The times we live in are unlike any that we’ve encountered in the past. The fast paced, technology laden, microwave based lifestyle of the west is all about “got to have it now”, “how do I get more,” and “make it go way if I don’t like the way it feels”.  Our nervous systems are over stimulated and therefore produce a constant need to be engaged, entertained, and informed. Our hyper driven pace is eroding our ability and desire to sit still, to be in the moment, or to pay close attention. What is most interesting is that many of us are seeking more than ever a more intimate spiritual experience, a more meaningful life, and sometimes just sustaining relief from the racing thoughts of the mind.

If only we could find a little time to disconnect from it all, allow ourselves a few moments throughout the day to go within, many of the things we think we need to keep the menacing thoughts, hard pressed desires, and self limiting judgments away would instead dissolve. We would truly be able to get in touch with our true nature. Watching the mind is the very technique we can use to find this wellspring of conscious living and deep freedom. The Indian mystic and spiritual guru, Osho, states, “Let go and make yourself vast and expansive. When old habits suddenly arise, don’t use mind to repress them. At just such a time, it’s like a snowflake on a red-hot stove. Not “keeping the mind still,” but mindlessness.” This is about watching the mind and its goings on, not forcing it to do anything, but watching it. As the watcher you will transform your life and therefore find the way.
